Budget, tail risk and limits

AI agent budget guardrail and P95 calculator

Model a transparent scenario, including the cost of enforcement lag. Percentiles and multipliers must come from measured workload data.

Specialized cost tool

Guardrail budget calculator

Model expected spend, a P95 reserve, enforcement lag and the maximum workload supported by a budget.

Maximum tasks will be calculated against the P95 task cost.

Formula: expected = tasks × average task cost; P95 reserve = expected × (multiplier − 1); headroom = budget − (expected + P95 reserve) − lag spend; max tasks = (budget − lag spend) ÷ (average cost × multiplier).

The multiplier, budget and lag spend are scenario assumptions. A guardrail cannot prevent spend already accepted during enforcement delay, retries or queued work.

Estimate, not a provider quote. Public list rates, regional terms, contract discounts, taxes and usage meters can change. Check the linked source and replace assumptions with your account terms before budgeting.

Pricing and method sources

Rate cards display their own verification and effective dates. Use the original provider source to confirm current billing details.

Do not use an average as a safety limit

Agent task costs can have a long tail because of retries, long outputs, tool loops and human escalation. Enter the measured percentile multiplier or a conservative scenario, then compare the reserve with the budget. The tool labels the P95 projection as scenario math, not a statistical forecast unless the factor came from actual logs.

Budget enforcement can lag

Rate-limit propagation, in-flight requests, asynchronous jobs and retry storms can continue to incur costs after a threshold is reached. Enter expected enforcement delay or extra spend and keep a reserve. For a full operating estimate, use the agent calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does the P95 value come from live traffic?

No. Enter a multiplier derived from your production task distribution or model an explicitly hypothetical scenario.

Why include enforcement delay?

Budgets and alerts may not stop requests immediately. In-flight calls and queued work can continue after a limit is crossed.

Is a P95 estimate a guarantee?

No. It is a planning calculation. It does not guarantee a spend cap or predict every tail event.

How do I estimate unit cost?

Use the source-linked Agent Cost Calculator with representative steps, tokens, cache use, retries, tools and manual-review assumptions.
